One of the most important ideas of modern man is his idea of the modern itself.（現代人についての最も重要な考えの一つは現代自体についての現代人の考えである。）

Of course men have always lived in “modern” times, but perhaps they have never been as much impressed by the fact.（なるほど人々は常に「現代」という時代に生活してきたのだが、たぶん彼らは今日ほどこの事実に感銘を覚えたことはなかっただろう。）

The word “modern” has not always been a weighty word; but for us it is, and behind it lies a particular idea of history and of our relationship to it.（「現代的」という言葉はいつも重厚な意味のある言葉だったわけではないが、私たちにとってはその通りであって、その裏には歴史と私たちの現代との関連という特別な考えがある。）

We assume that we live in a world of caseless change, and that our problems are persistently novel, and precedent and the past are almost no guides.（我々は絶えず変化する世界に住み、自分たちの課題が永続的に新しいものになり、先例や過去が殆ど指針にならないと思っている。）

And so to be modern is not only to live now, but to live now in an unprecedented way.（だから現代的であることは今に生きているというだけでなく先例のないようなやり方で今に生きることである。）

Men in the past also must obviously have had a feeling of the distinction between the lives of their generation and previous ones.（過去の人たちもまた明らかに自分たちの世代とその前の世代との生活の差異を感じていたに違いない。）

Yet nowadays we surely feel the situation in a very different way, both because the speed of change has enormously accelerated, and because we depend on it and, in a sense, make use of it.（だが近頃は変化の速度が非常に加速されてきたこと、そしてそれに頼ってある意味利用していること、この二つの理由から情勢が非常に変わってきていることを私たちは確かに感じている。）
