Those who live nobly, even if in their day they lived obscurely, need not fear that they will have lived in vain.（高潔な生活を送っている人々は、若いころ世に知られずに過ごしていたとしても、無駄に一生を過ごしてしまうのではなかろうかと気遣う必要はない。）

Something shines from their lives, some light that shows the way to their friends, their neighbors, perhaps to long future ages.（こういう人々の生活からは何かが輝く、すなわち友達や近くの者はもちろんのことひょっとすると遠い後の世の人々にも進むべき道を示すようなある光が輝くのだ。）

Many men nowadays seem to have the feeling that in vast modern societies there is nothing of importance that the individual can do.（広大な現代社会においては重要なことで個人の成し得ることは何もないという考えを持っている人が今日たくさんいるようだ。）

This is a mistake.（だがこれは間違いである。）

The individual, if he is filled with love of mankind, with courage and with endurance, can do a great deal.（人類愛と勇気と忍耐とに満たされているなら個人の成し得ることは多いのだ。）

Luck or the grace of Heaven may seem to take part in many happenings in life, but a little deeper looking into the causes of them would certainly reveal that one’s own efforts were by far more responsible for them than most people imagine.（好運や神の恵みは人生における多くの出来事の原因となるように思えるかもしれないが、人生の出来事の原因をもう少し深く調べてみると、たいていの人々の想像をはるかに上回って個人の努力がその原因になっていたことが必ずやはっきりわかるだろう。）

We cannot help thinking that it is a profound truth which the old proverb says: “Heaven helps those who helps themselves.”（古い諺が「天は自ら助くる者を助く。」と言っているがそれは深い真実だと考えざるを得ないのである。）
